Material & Finish
These are black zinc plated computer screws — carbon steel (an iron base, described as both "carbon steel" and "iron" on our own artwork) with a black zinc coating. The zinc layer gives everyday corrosion protection for normal indoor builds, and the black finish keeps the inside of a case looking uniform instead of revealing bright, mismatched hardware. One thing worth being clear about: this is carbon steel, not stainless steel. For damp rooms, coastal air or humid climates, ask us about a stainless variant as an OEM option — it costs more but it will not rust. The hex standoffs are the parts buyers ask about most: they raise the board off the chassis floor and insulate it, so the soldered joints on the back of the board cannot touch metal.
Thread Systems & How to Choose
The kit mixes two thread systems on purpose, because a PC does too:
- 6-32 UNC (US inch thread) — the classic PC case, PSU and expansion-slot thread, used on most ATX case panels, fan mounts and card brackets.
- M3 / M5 (metric) — common on motherboard mounting, drive caddies and accessory fittings, especially on non-US brands.
That is why these motherboard standoff screws and case screws sit in one box: you rarely know which system a given hole uses until you try it. Test one hole with light finger pressure first — if it binds, stop and try the other system. Forcing a 6-32 screw into an M3 hole (or the reverse) will damage the thread.
